About Fillings

You may need a filling if your tooth has decay or from accidental damage. A filling is a very simple procedure in which decay and the affected tooth structure is removed. The area is replaced with a strong filling material which is either a silver filling or a white filling. Your dentist will advise you on which is best for you.

The Procedure

A topical Anaesthetic is applied to the gum of the affected tooth. A small injection is given to the patient, this is a local anaesthetic. The are will be numbed for a few hours. You will be very numb and your lips will have no feeling so be careful after the procedure.

Your Dentist may advise you what type of filling you want. There is Amalgam which is a compound material consisting of tin, zinc, copper, mercury and silver. It has a long lasting life and can withstand a lot of pressure. Another type is Composite or White filling. This is a material which is similar in colour to your own tooth and is a plastic type material. It comes in different shades of white and the dentist will choose the closest shade for your teeth colour.
